[EBS1 세계의 드라마] 브론테 자매 이야기
오늘 밤 12시 50분에 [EBS1 세계의 드라마]에서 <브론테 자매 이야기(To Walk Invisible: The Lives of Bronte Sisters, 2016)>을 방송하네요.
1시간씩 총 2부작인데 편성표에 1부인지 2부인지 안 적혀 있는 걸 보면 오늘 1, 2부 연이어 방송하나 싶기도 한데요.
<제인 에어>와 <폭풍의 언덕> 모두 재미있게 읽었지만 브론테 자매가 어떤 삶을 살았는지는 잘 몰라서 궁금한 마음에 보려고 합니다.
늦은 밤 잠 안 오는 분들, 같이 봐요.
이 드라마에 나온 에밀리 브론테의 시가 멋있어서 찾아보니 The Prisoner라는 시의 일부인데
아래 두 번째와 세 번째는 드라마에서 읽은 부분이 아닌 것 같아서 다시 찾아보니
High Waving Heather라는 시의 첫째 연이네요.
He comes with Western winds, with evening's wandering airs,
With that clear dusk of heaven that brings the thickest stars:
Winds take a pensive tone, and stars a tender fire,
And visions rise, and change, that kill me with desire.
Desire for nothing known in my maturer years,
When Joy grew mad with awe, at counting future tears:
When, if my spirit's sky was full of flashes warm,
I knew not whence they came, from sun or thunder-storm.
But first, a hush of peace—a soundless calm descends;
The struggle of distress and fierce impatience ends.
Mute music soothes my breast—unutter'd harmony
That I could never dream, till Earth was lost to me.
Then dawns the Invisible; the Unseen its truth reveals;
My outward sense is gone, my inward essence feels;
Its wings are almost free—its home, its harbour found,
Measuring the gulf, it stoops, and dares the final bound.
O dreadful is the check—intense the agony—
When the ear begins to hear, and the eye begins to see;
When the pulse begins to throb—the brain to think again—
The soul to feel the flesh, and the flesh to feel the chain.
Yet I would lose no sting, would wish no torture less;
The more that anguish racks, the earlier it will bless;
And robed in fires of hell, or bright with heavenly shine,
If it but herald Death, the vision is divine.
High waving heather, 'neath stormy blasts bending,
Midnight and moonlight and bright shining stars;
Darkness and glory rejoicingly blending,
Earth rising to heaven and heaven descending,
Man's spirit away from its drear dongeon sending,
Bursting the fetters and breaking the bars.
All down the mountain sides, wild forest lending
One mighty voice to the life-giving wind;
Rivers their banks in the jubilee rending,
Fast through the valleys a reckless course wending,
Wider and deeper their waters extending,
Leaving a desolate desert behind.
Shining and lowering and swelling and dying,
Changing for ever from midnight to noon;
Roaring like thunder, like soft music sighing,
Shadows on shadows advancing and flying,
Lightning-bright flashes the deep gloom defying,
Coming as swiftly and fading as soon.
underground님이 올리신 두번째 시에서 뒤섞이고 변화하는 심상들과 압운(?)들이 좋아요. 어떻게 이런 아름다운 단어들을 차곡차곡 쌓아넣는지 대단해요. (첫번째 시는 제 영어 실력엔 어려워요^^)
뭔가 격렬하고 고통스럽고 시각 청각 촉각이 다 들고 일어나게 하는 시인 것 같아요. ^^
<폭풍의 언덕>처럼 어둡고 잔혹한 파멸의 이야기를 쓴 작가가 시를 쓰면 이런 게 나오는구나 싶고...
시인은 평범한 단어들을 새롭게 조합해서 이전에 그 단어가 갖지 못했던 아름다움을 부여하는 재능이 있는 사람인 것 같아요.
두자매 이야기 좋았던 기억이 있었던 듯 한데 아무 생각도 안나 찾아봐야겠네요.
어제 드라마 보는데 정말 배우 캐스팅 잘했다는 생각이 들더군요.
샬롯 브론테는 딱 <제인 에어>스럽게 단호한 원칙주의자처럼 생겼고
에밀리 브론테는 딱 <폭풍의 언덕>스럽게 광기어린 섬뜩한 인상이고...
작품의 캐릭터나 분위기가 작가와 별개로 거저 나오는 게 아니구나 싶더군요.
