ABC apologizes for airing improper ad

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- The US ABC television network on Tuesday apologized for
airing an advertisement containing improper scenes to promote its popular program "Desperate
Housewives" before the telecast of "Monday Night Football."

"We have heard from many of our viewers about last night's 'MNF' opening segment, and we
agree that the placement was inappropriate," ABC Sports said in a statement. "We apologize."

The segment was aired before ABC's "Monday Night Football" livebroadcast of the Eagles' victory
over the Dallas Cowboys at 6 p.m.local time (2:00 a.m. GMT).

The segment featured "Desperate Housewives" star Nicolette Sheridan seducing Philadelphia
Eagles receiver Terrell Owens in a locker room.

Sheridan appeared wrapped in a bath towel and beckoned the football player to skip his game for
her. Although no nudity was shown, it was implied when Sheridan dropped the towel to the floor
before she and Owens embraced.

The camera then pulled back to show "Desperate Housewives" co-stars Teri Hatcher and Felicity
Huffman watching the scene on their television and talking about desperate women.

The National Football League criticized ABC for airing the ad as "inappropriate and unsuitable for
our 'Monday Night Football' audience."

"While ABC may have gained attention for one of its other shows, the NFL and its fans lost," the
league said in a statement.

"Desperate Housewives" is the second most-watched show on US television this season after the
CBS detective drama "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." The program is a dark comic series
focusing on the personal lives and sexual exploits of a group of female suburbanites.

CBS has been fined by the Federal Communications Commission for the live telecast of the Super
Bowl halftime show on Feb. 1, in which pop singer Janet Jackson exposed her right breast.

Sheridan said, "I can't help myself. I love you, T.O."

Owens: "Then how about you tell me what's buried underneath that pool."

Sheridan: "You know I can't tell you that."

Owens: "Then I got a game to play."

Sheridan: "Terrell, wait."

Then, Sheridan drops her towel.

Owens: "Aw hell, the team's going to have to win this one without me."
