Charlize Wowed 'Em
2004 was the year in which Charlize Theron won the Best Actress Oscar for her role as lesbian serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. Theron's transformation from South African beauty into the somewhat less beautiful Wuornos is a sight to behold, and her character got to hump Christina Ricci (wearing a dodgy wig) too.

We Hung Our Heads in Shame
Kitten Pindar was no Anna Nolan. The scarily mad activist upset just about everyone with her antics on Big Brother this summer. We spent most of the series explaining to our straight friends that "not all lesbians are like her." And then she got kicked off. Oh well…

TATu Didn't Return
The Russian popstrels attempted a comeback in 2004 but it all went a bit pear-shaped after they admitted that they weren't really gay. Meanwhile Julia Volkova (the gingery one) gave birth to a baby girl in September, hope the tot keeps her out of trouble for a while.

We Were Glued to Our Televisions
The adventures of Bette, Tina and the rest of them (but not Jennifer, the annoying one) made staying in a pleasure again as we got to grips with the first season of The L Word. And it's official: Kate 'Shane' Moennig is…a very popular woman, heh heh.

They Came Out
Heather Matarazzo, the gutsy co-star of the kid-flick series The Princess Diaries told The Advocate: "Every single night I spend with my wife is the most perfect, beautiful, romantic evening. Even just drawing her a bath. It makes me want to cry because I've never been so happy." Meanwhile Sara Gilbert, who played mouthy daughter Darlene in the long-running sitcom Roseanne has just had a baby daughter with her girlfriend Allison Adler. Margot James became a Conservative Party candidate and went public about her relationship with Jay Hunt, one of the makeover experts from the BBC TV programme Would Like to Meet. And not to be outdone, crusty old protest singer Joan Baez said that she had a few flings with the ladies back in the 1960s.

Ellen and Portia and Francesca and Alexandra
Queen of the A-Dykes Ellen DeGeneres ditched her girlfriend Alexandra Hedison for Arrested Development cutie Portia de Rossi, who in turn left her main squeeze Francesca Gregorini. It's true, lesbian life really is like that big wall chart in The L Word

Miranda Went Gay
Cynthia Nixon, aka Miranda from Sex in the City, came out as a lesbian. She revealed in an interview that she has been seeing Christine Marinoni, an educational activist who shares with her girlfriend: "a strong commitment to improving the lives of children." Sweet!

Fi and Saffy Moved In Together
Britain gained two more A-Dykes when The Sun reported that actresses Fiona Shaw and Saffron Burrows were living together as a couple. Although both Burrows and Shaw have remained tight-lipped about their relationship, this wasn't exactly news but we're glad they're happy with each other.

Jeanette Opened a Fruit Stall
Mad-as-a-snake author Jeanette Winterson opened a food shop in the ground floor of her house in London's Spitalfields. Verdes will sell posh nosh to the local yuppies and I won't have been the first to add that oranges are not the only fruit they stock.

And Finally…
Tori "90210" Spelling, the ditzy, spoiled, actress daughter of a mega-successful television producer Aaron raised $250 at a Hollywood charity auction by lapdancing for a lesbian. Perhaps it was the result of one cocktail too many but Spelling ended up getting down to it with a woman who could only be described as a very surprised and happy-looking bulldagger of a certain age.
